Before Hawrelak Park, before the Valley Zoo, before Elk Island National Park, before Galaxyland -- there was Borden Park.

Once the city's largest, most popular park, its 148 acres, or 60 hectares, of green space and outdoor amusements drew crowds of up to 7,000 on sunny summer Sundays. First opened in 1906, under the dull but descriptive name East End City Park, Borden got a new name in 1914, after a visit from then prime minister Sir Robert Borden.

In its glory days, it was Edmonton's playground.
