Nice place to visit

In my family, the people who live on the prairies visit the people who live on the west coast. The Vancouver-Victoria family members rarely come the other way. So it was a special pleasure last week to escort my oldest sister and her husband, Vancouver residents for decades, around Edmonton.

The weather sort of sucked, but otherwise we had fun.

I escorted five people, several of whom were defiant non-theatre-goers, to the Fringe Festival. We saw three plays -- the Victor Borge one, a local comedy about football fans, and Movin' Melvin Brown singing Ray Charles -- and liked them all. One day we went on a Kalyna Country driving tour through the Ukrainian settlement area northeast of here, pausing at the Victoria Settlement historic site and the Ukrainian Easter egg at Vegreville. My brother-in-law liked the egg so much he insisted we visit the giant sausage in Mundare so he could get his picture taken with it.

We even went to West Edmonton Mall -- noisy, crowded, but impressive in its own gargantuan way. And we went to a $5 outdoor concert at Festival Place in Sherwood Park that was worth the price of a ticket.

This is a really fun city for a holiday. I wish more people knew that.

A lot of people would never bother going out to do the things mentioned in this letter. They would rather sit at home and complain about how there's nothing to do. :?
