Challenger withdraws from mayoral race

Published: Monday, June 11, 2007

The one candidate planning to challenge Mayor Stephen Mandel in the civic election has changed his mind.

Mike Pietramala, 47, said today he has withdrawn from the race for health reasons.

Pietramala, who runs a home-based marketing and public relations firm, announced in February that he was running for mayor.

So far there are no other candidates for mayor of Edmonton. In the 2004 election, eight men ran for mayor.

In Strathcona County, Mayor Cathy Olesen is being challenged by two county councillors, Ken Lesniak and Brent Jewell. In St. Albert, where Mayor Paul Chalifoux isn't seeking re-election, former mayor Richard Plain and Coun. Nolan Crouse are running for the mayor's job.

Election day is Oct. 15.

Ok, I'll challenge Stephen!!!!!!!! I challenge you to a hot dog eating contest...

This speaks volumes about the fact that everyone is NOT against Mandel....

I'd vote for you...to win that hot dog eating contest...

Seriously it would be nice to have a little competition/challenge to the mayoralty race if only to bring some issues to the forefront.

Mayor Mandel might take you up on the challenge, as long as the hotdogs are kosher.
