"In a city where available rinks were already scarce, one has been closed for nearly one year for renovations, while it was supposed to open later this year, its not, and some are not impressed.

The Clareview Arena closed for renovations in May, 2012.

The arena stands alongside where a new $100 million recreation centre, school and library will be built the facility is set to open in early 2014 the neighbouring arena was originally set to open before the new facility.

Will be nice when this facility opens, as it'll take the presure off other rec centres and rinks

A few friends who live up in that area are very excited to have a new facility at Clareview

Well hopefully they get it open asap. I think the city has to really step it up for upgrading or opening new arena's too throughout the remainder of the city. I wonder if there is any room to build a 3rd rink at McCarfaa in Mill woods?

Would be nice to have some more options for ice time, sooner than later. Starting our games at 11:00pm gets to be rather late when you have to work early the next day.

This library will be greatly used. It should take a lot of pressure off the Londondery branch in the mall

Next major rec centre will be Bonnie Doon and or Coronation I believe.

They want to close Tipton, Donnan, Oliver and Coronation rinks.

I'm going to miss the old Coronation Arena. I lived blocks away and spent a lot of time there, including intramural hockey at Shep.

Why in the world would we close Oliver?

I saw an add on the side of the bus saying the Clareview Rec Center will open soon, however I wonder if we should start a pool and pick dates when Clareview, Meadows Rec Center and the NAIT LRT will open. I'm going to pick April 1st 2015.

So is the arena/rec center open yet? I do know that the Meadows Rec center is getting close. I hope that the next project is the Bonnie Doon rec center.

Inside looks absolutely gorgeous. I haven't seen The Meadows, but Clareview is definitely a lot nicer than Terwillegar, Commonwealth, Millenium, Van Vliet etc. The Library in it as well, just dynamite.

Should be the envy of the City, but it's also going to be the best connected to the LRT, so a large part of the City can easily access it.

Great work, ATB, Clarke, EPL, ECSD, and City! Hard to wait for because it's going to be so awesome.

The city on their Facebook page announced The Meadows Recreation Centre will open Thursday, November 27th.

PS: No word yet on Clareview.

Again this really is deplorable.

The city is getting lots of feedback and complaints about this as well and not doing anything to adjust their updating priority.

Why would a city value facebook more than their own site?

Its just incomprehensible.

A lot of adults shun facebook ethically as a rule. Why is the city posting news first in the facebook cesspool?

^ Well to answer the question, I suspect it has to do with the person in question being more familiar with and having greater control over the facebook account than the CoE site.

About the facillity in question though, really looking forward to the opening, might start using it instead of Commonwealth -- easier to get to from LRT, nicer.

The City has been behind on several projects and I think has a responsibility to shareholders (taxpayers) to be a little more time sensitive in reporting the opening of facilities and infrastructure that were supposed to be open long ago on the appropriate site.

Kind of hard to understand as well given that theres been really good weather for construction during projects.

But as far as updating COE site the concern is that its often taking days for anybody to bother to update the Cities own site(after deluges of complaints in each instance) after info is released on Facebook. As a taxpayer and conscientious citizen that ethically will not join facebook I find it poor taste at best for the city to be conducting information release in this haphazard manner. Completely unacceptable.

Would it be closer to the LRT station than Commonwealth though? It must be a good 1 to 2 blocks away

What isn't yet shown on Google Maps is that you will be able to walk directly North of those condos on a pedestrian only way right from the station. I'm not positive that it's closer but it'll be a much better route.

Clareview will by almost a 1/3 further walk than going to the main doors at Commonwealth, FYI and about twice the distance of going to the back doors.

But I will check out Clareview... have a few friends who live up that way that are really excited to have a nice faciity in their area

Technical aside that the sports fields are part of the facility, and immediately adjacent the station. You just have to walk past the fields. Maybe farther, but I think it would be a nicer walk.

Possibly. Stadium road is a busy thoroughfare, and the blank wall of the stadium doesn't help the pedestrian "experience"

Although worth noting that you can walk down the pedestrian walkway to Stadium road, cross, and then head south on the big wide sidewalk, so there's little interaction with traffic as a pedestrian, except for crossing Stadium road

JayBee

^That's exactly the route I use. At least avoids the stadium, as you say.

There's something fishy about your numbers. I get about 475 metres from platform to doors of either recreation centre.

What routes are you taking exactly?

This facility is now open!

I went yesterday, fantastic building, fantastic range of amenities, but what impressed me most was the huge number of users already. Not tire kickers, but users. I thought it might already be more crowded than Commonwealth.

Does it have a lazy river? Was checking on the plans posted at the city's site it seemed that they do. We went to The Meadows and it was okay but in truth Terwillegar is better as they pool has both a lazy river AND a wave pool.

JayBee

Lazy river, yes, waterslide, yes, toddler pool, yes, lane swimming pool separate from kids pools, yes.

Wave pool, no.

Library, yes, Olympic sized rink (complete with Jamie and Jessica Greg's speed skating club), yes, double gymnasium, yes, 7 sports fields, yes.

Urbanity in a Suburban Land - Canadian Architect
Graham Livesey reports on Clareview Community Recreation Centre, one of many significant contributions that Teeple Architects has made to Alberta over the past several years.

July 2, 2015 by Graham Livesey

"Teeple’s work in Alberta began with the Montrose Cultural Centre in Grande Prairie (2009), home to the Grande Prairie Public Library and Teresa Sargent Hall; this was followed by the tightly configured Art Gallery of Grande Prairie (2012). These adjacent projects respond to local context: they involve the rejuvenation of a historic school and help establish a new civic centre in downtown Grande Prairie. The nearby town of Wembley is home to Teeple’s Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, scheduled for unveiling this fall. Current projects on the boards include a new facility for the Edmonton Police Service and the transformation of the central Stanley A. Milner Public Library in downtown Edmonton; the firm has also undertaken conceptual work for the Haskayne School of Business expansion at the University of Calgary.

One of Teeple’s most impressive projects in the province is the recently opened Clareview Community Recreation Centre (CCRC), completed in partnership with Architecture | Tkalcic Bengert. CCRC is part of Edmonton’s program to create world-class architecture with new libraries, recreation centres, LRT stations, museums, and an ambitious downtown redevelopment plan (see CA, January 2013).
