Fire department seeks lawsuit protection
Council to debate a proposed change in law to protect firefighters

The Edmonton fire department wants protection from a mounting number of lawsuits.

The city currently is dealing with five or six lawsuits with total claims of $30 million, all resulting from fires handled by the fire department, department spokeswoman Nikki Booth said today in an interview today.

None of the suits has reached court yet, but dealing with them eats up enormous amounts of time and money, said Booth.

City council will debate a proposal Tuesday from city administrators calling on the province to change the Municipal Government Act to protect firefighters, and the municipal governments that employ them, from lawsuits resulting from fires.

Under the proposal, claims for loss, injury and damage from a fire wouldn't be allowed so long as the firefighters acted in good faith.

If council approves the proposal, it will be submitted as an Edmonton resolution to be considered at the annual convention of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, which will be held in November in Calgary.

I would be really interested in what types of lawsuites were looking at here.

I'm thinking some pretty frivous stuff, but maybe the FD has been spending to much time with the EPS and their are valid concerns?
