Hi All
I'm thinking of moving to Edmonton from Ireland with my wife and young daughter within the next year and I'm just wondering if there is any work there for a painter/decorator. We are a young family and I've done my research on Edmonton and have to say it looks fantastic. However most of the threads I've come across seem to be a few years old and I would appreciate if anyone could give me info on what the rental market is like for homes on the West-side, is there still work available, average earnings for a painter/decorator, etc. Any information you can give me would be a great help. Thanks in advance

rentfaster.ca is a great website to help you find a place.

^^This tells you everything you need to know about your job that is relevant to Edmonton and the rest of Alberta.

I'd say that our local and provincial economies are still strong. Edmonton's housing market appears to be holding up well and the cost of an average home is still well below that of Calgary, so all other things being equal, a new home buyer in Edmonton should have more disposable/save'able income.

There's number of useful links for you here:

There are lots of jobs in the construction trades these days, you will have little problem there if you're willing to work hard and do a quality job.

Thanks GreenSPACE. I've been on that website before. It's good. I've been on rentfaster.ca loads of times too looking for houses to rent. Any idea on how much utilities cost on average? Electric, heating, water, T.V, Phone, etc, I know you can get package deals for T.V, phone and internet but can you pay one company for water, electric and heating or has each one got a different provider. Again, thanks all for your help.

Direct Energy and Enmax provide gas. EPCOR and Enmax provide power. You can have those rolled into one with power if you like depending on the provider. I wouldn't recommend contracts because natural gas rates are very low expected to be that way for most of the decade.

Depending on where you live your usage can vary widely. I would guess gas at around $100/month in winter and power average family $100-150/month. Anyone else think that is reasonable?

The City could use such help. I don't know who they have painting over graffiti but their rolled on blotches look almost as bad as what they are covering up - no taping or any effort whatsoever to colour match or otherwise do an even half way suitable job.
(eg southbound on Gateway Boulevard at Anthony Henday - the pylons between the off-ramps on the west side of the road. Leaves such a wonderful last impression of Edmonton on the way out of town. Same problem below the legislature/high level bridge.)

robbie, if you come to Edmonton, please forgive us for our value and image-destroying touchups.

Signing a contract for power is good, gas, isn't good. I use Enmax and get $0.08 kwh, but I'm floating for the gas.

Hahaha. KC we have the same problem over here with the graffiti touch-ups. Some of them do look a lot worse than the graffiti itself.
