Well,

It seems that by putting in more stringent measures, C2E is now under attack almost like a DoS attack. I haven't seen this many attempts to register, well, ever!

The measures are auto moderating the IP's, instantly putting them in a moderation queue, but I may still need yoiu all to keep an eye out.

C2E does subscribe to an anti-spam service and does automatically report IP's, e-maill address configuration, and username syntax to all services we can.

Please be patient. I hope the measures put in place tonight stand firm.

Wow.

8 human verification bypassing spammers have got the verification e-mail in the last 5 minutes. They will get blocked when they try to post.

30 are registering as I type, but their known IP's have them blocked.

Someone in China is having fun!

I'm curious. Is China really where they are coming from? At one time, they came from Nigeria where people who were training to be Nigerian spammers were paid to try to enter one bulletin board after another making "conversation".

What really annoys me about these spammers is that I can't imagine they're selling many handbags or sneakers this way. So they're annoying us for nothing.

The anti-spam services we subscribe to, along with one of my own, confirm the origin. India, China, and Russia are the top 3 lately. Tonight, it is China.

Search users by join date in descending order to see what admin is talking about lol. I don't get how spammers make money. Who falls for it?

One thing I did with my forum was added a custom field to the registration page, then I turned on the feature that emails me when someone registers. It's easy to look at that custom field, and if the data entered there doesn't make sense then I dump the user into a "moderated" category, just in case.

That is one of my favorite all time bits. I didn't have time to post the video as I was deciding what to have with my spam. Wait, I DON'T LIKE SPAM!

Anyway, it seems the measures are working. I am crossing my fingers.

My own website has also seen a recent spike in spambot registrations - it's gone from 20 to 30 a day to well over 100. They are such a pain.

Whats the point in these spammers? It's not to sell you something... It's to bring you to a conprimised website in attempt to infect your computer... For the most part. Your compromised computer is then added to an army of compromised computers that are all controlled by one person or entity who then use the combined resources of this army to dos (denial of service) to any target they want.

So far, any spammer that has made it through either posted before the 16th, or was registered before the 16th. There have only been 3 ID's so far.

Thank you for reporting these.

There have been an impressive number of them getting on here lately. I hope the new measures help out.

Though I must say these handbag peddlers lack originality. I got a very good spam email at work last week. A personally signed letter from J. Edgar Hoover, who was trying to blackmail me for some dirt the FBI had on my "suspicious activities". I was most impressed that Hoover is still managing to send out letters these days.

Medwards, sometimes the spammers are trying for something completely different - Google placement. If they can register on forums and link to their sites, Google can interpret those links as interest in the site, which can boost the placement in searches.

When I started my forum I started to notice a number of new users that wouldn't post anything. When I looked at their profiles on the forum, I noticed there would be links to other sites. A little bit of research revealed the info above, and instructions on how to turn off the displaying of this information to non-registered users (which also means google and other bots can't see it). Immediately there was a substantial decrease in registrations.

It seems the new measures in place have prevented many spammers from getting through to actually post. They are getting automatically banned if their IP, e-mail, or username meet a known spammer list.

Some do make it through, but the instant moderation of all new member's posts prevents you all from seeing the vast majority of them. The only slips so far are spam ID's that made it through the massive user ID sweep I did a week ago.

We have ~2,000 spam ID's that we will archive soon. I want to make sure that all this is loaded into the anti-spam services we subscribe to before I do so though. You may see the member count drop by that much soon.

Thank you for your patience.

Wow. I think we upset the apple cart here! 45 new users on average sign up daily over the past week, posting up to 30 new threads each. This is a huge increase in attempts and posts compared to when we brought in the new measures.

This is very interesting.

Thank you. It is almost like we upset the hornet's nest. I think Gord's suggesting is looking good right now. The spam bots and their human form want the placement, and when their posts are moderated, they seem to try to overload the post count as many boards have a minimum post count before you are approved.

This is not going to work as the method I'm using is not about post count. :)

well that would make it two in a row wouldn't it? and i guess that would make this three.

except the first one was at least acknowledging that the post prior to his contained information he found interesting... yours was just a shot. and i suppose this one is as well. :(

If you consider that Ken and yours, and even my posts have contributed to the topic, these posts wouldn't have occurred if the first offending post hadn't occurred. In the sense, the first offending post might be considered to have now contributed the most to the conversation (out of all the current posts we are referring to)

I want to thank you, Admin, for the work that you do on this forum. The SPAM must waste lot of your time, and I'm sure it's frustrating. I know of forums (fora?) that have just shut down because the creeps have made a situation where it just wasn't worth the effort.

Thanks. I understand the last part. Between the snot-o-grams I regularly receive, the ongoing arguments, and tonight 400 more spammers, it is rapidly getting to that point.
