$3.6M makeover mulled for Edmonton park
BY GORDON KENT, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COMFEBRUARY 25, 2010 11:48 AM

EDMONTON — The city is looking at spending $3.6 million to put up new washrooms, a trailhead building and other amenities in Edmonton’s Whitemud Park.

The park, which links the North Saskatchewan River with the Whitemud Ravine trail system, is now served by outhouses and a warm-up trailer that need to be replaced, according to a city report released Thursday.

The washrooms would be put north of Fox Drive and the trailhead building on the south side of Fox Drive near the toboggan hill.

A paved parking lot at the trailhead will now be about 200 square metres, less than one-third the size originally planned to reduce the environmental impact.

These locations are essential, a requirement for development in the river valley, because they’re already served by roads, parking and utilities, and will provide recreation and programming benefits, the report says.

I would like to see a break down of the costs for this project. To me 3.6 million for a building, bathrooms and parking lot is excessive. A couple of Acto trailers would be 100K and another gracious 500K for a parking lot - would put the cost at 600K and save 3million and allow you to do the same at 5 other areas throughout the city......

/\ consulting fees, community consultations and expert reviews will eat up the rest of that pretty quick

Yep, gotta make sure all the old ladies like the bathroom designs AND the sandwich selection at the meeting.

Yep, gotta make sure all the old ladies like the bathroom designs AND the sandwich selection at the meeting.

Unfortunatly someone can't just decide on one thing and do it. Consultation is ok but I swear this city is obsesed with consultations, studies, panels, etc... Somewhere down the line long ago someone decided, let's study the subjects to death until everyone will like the idea. Obviously they never heard the term, or don't want to hear the term, "You can please some of the people most of the time or most of the people some of the time but rarely please most of the people most of the time."

City committee approves $3.6M upgrade to Whitemud Park
EDMONTONJOURNAL.COMMARCH 2, 2010 5:02 PM

EDMONTON — The city is pushing ahead with a $3.6-million upgrade of Whitemud Park, including new washrooms, a trailhead building and other amenities.

The park, which links the North Saskatchewan River with the Whitemud Ravine trail system, is now served by outhouses and a trailer that need to be replaced, city planners said Tuesday.

The trailhead building, which will include a warm-up area, community gathering space and storage, will be built on the south side of Fox Drive near the toboggan hill while the washrooms will go north of Fox Drive.

To reduce the environmental impact, the design calls for a parking lot of about 200 square metres, or 40 stalls, which is less than one-third the size originally planned.

“This will make it more attractive for families with children to visit the park regularly, plus the facilities will be fully accessible to persons with disabilities,” planner Gabriele Barry said.

Well from the sounds of it this will be a positive improvement for the area.
